The Handy Camp, Incorporated (HC) is a
recently incorporated
Pennsylvania nonprofit organization dedicated to
making
the outdoor recreation
accessible to the physically challenged.
HC has been established and will be
operated for charitable and
educational purposes. The organization is seeking recognition of exemption from the Internal Revenue Service under
Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Handy Camp’s mission is to educate physically
challenged men,
women, children and their
families on
how to hunt and fish and enjoy the great
outdoors. HC will also work to make public lands more accessible to the physically-challenged hunters and fishermen.
Our activities will include providing a lodge for disabled hunters and fishermen and their
families. We will
teach these physically-challenged outdoorsmen
how to hunt and fish and make
these
outdoor activities accessible to them. For example, we may
have
a father, with his physically-challenged son who is confined to a
wheelchair. The father wants to teach his
son
how to harvest his first white tail deer. Our organization
would make this possible by
determining the necessary equipment needed
for this
family
to have a successful hunt. We
would help
teach the
son to shoot a gun or how to use abow and arrow at a range. An HC
volunteer
would then take the father and son into the woods to scout for deer and to find the blind
or area where the
hunters will be settling in to wait for their quarry.
Section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue
Code provides tax exemptions to groups
organized and
operated exclusively for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, and educational purposes. The word “charitable”, as used in Section
501(c)(3),
has been
broadly defined to mean “providing
services beneficial to the public interest”. The activities of Handy Camp will
clearly benefit the
public interest Providing the disabled access to outdoor activities is beneficial to the physically- challenged and the community as a whole.
The activities of HC also
serve educational purposes, Treasury Reg.
1.501(c)(3)-1(d)(3)
defines “educational” as instructing the public on subjects useful to the individual and
beneficial
to the comnunity. Teaching people who are interested in
outdoor activities how to
overcome their physical challenges in order to enjoy the activity is beneficial to
HC’S
patrons. The community benefits by having
obstacles to accessibility
removed for its citizens.
The Handy Camp, Incorporated deserves
IRC Section
501(c)(3) status because its programs
serve both
charitable and educational purposes.
